The UK's only dedicated glass museum, the Broadfield House Glass Museum at Dudley in the West Midlands, is threatened with closure as part of a money-saving exercise by Dudley council.
Many glass collectors and enthusiasts, me included, feel this is not only a short-sighted approach but also will be extremely damaging in terms of the collection currently held at the museum.
The announced intention is to move the collection to a much smaller site at nearby Red House Cone, Wordsley. A site which in 2002 was determined by Dudley council to be too small to hold the collection at that time!
Rather than follow this path, it would make more sense for Dudley council to enhance their glass museum facility thus allowing good and continued access to the collection, the archive and the library all currently at Broadfield House, and seeking national collection status for the museum, with a view to its becoming the UK's official National Glas Museum.
